Stunning Antique European Bar Billiards Table c1930. Bar billiards was introduced into the UK in the mid 1930s by a man named David Gill who had seen the game of Billard Russe being played in bars in Belgium and had the idea that a similar game could be popular in UK. On his return to England Gill approached renowned billiard table manufacturers, W Jelks & Sons of London to produce a British version of the game. As a result the first UK Bar Billiard table was installed in the'Rose & Crown' in Elham nr. Canterbury in early 1934 and the first pub league was created in Oxford in 1936.

The game is time-based, each coin giving between 10 and 20 minutes of play. Players score points by potting balls into holes of various values whilst avoiding toppling skittles on the playing surface.

This table was manufactured by J Kohl & Co. Of Leige, Belgium, in the mid to late 1930s and as such it would almost certainly be similar if not identical to the game that inspired David Gill to bring bar billiards to the UK around the same period.

It is beautifully crafted from oak with decorative carved panels on each leg and along the sides. It has it's original timing mechanism in great working order and comes with a handful of Belgium 10 Franc coins dated from 1941 to 1946 which are needed to operate the timer. The coins were recovered from different places of the internal parts of the table during restoration. The frame has been thoroughly treated for woodworm and has been finished using Fiddes supreme wax polish to bring its original silky patina back to life. The playing surface (not slate) and side cushions have been recovered using Grey Strachan 6811 Tournament Cloth.

Cushion rubbers have also been replaced, as the original 1930s ones had perished over the years. The balls and skittles are genuine vintage items specifically sourced to compliment the age of the table.

Cues are more recent items. The main difference between this table and the standard game played in the UK is that it has 8 holes, whereas the UK one has 9 (an additional hole worth 200 points being placed lower down the table to create a diamond). The table measures 83 inches long, 39.5 wide, 31.5 high.

Full rules and table set up will be included along with balls, skittles and cues. It doesnt come with a scoreboard, but scores can be easily kept paper or chalkboard during the game.
